Abundance was started in 2007 by WEN. The purpose of the Abundance group is to avoid waste (you would be amazed how many fruit trees there are in West Ealing!) and build a sense of community by undertaking shared tasks. We are part of a nationwide Abundance network than won the grassroots category of the Observer Ethical Awards in 2010.
We have around 50 volunteers on our list, some more active than others! The volunteers will help with a variety of different activities in the fruit season – picking fruit being the most popular as we usually have so much via requests from private tree owners, or through our arranged picking parties where we will hunt for elderflowers and blackberries in the open spaces of West Ealing and surrounding area. We also have a small Orchard – Walmer Gardens, which we have taken over and are now starting to renovate. To make money for the project to purchase equipment, hold events etc we make jams, chutneys and cordials that we sell at local events as well as independent retailers in the area.
Everyone involved in the project offers up their time on a purely voluntary basis.
