I thought I saw signs of action yesterday at the old Blockbusters on the corner of the Uxbridge Road and St James Avenue. Then this morning I had another look and ,yes, work is underway to turn it in to a Morrisons. They are clearing out the store in readiness for the new fit out. I had a word with a man with a Morrisons hi-vis jacket and he wasn’t sure of the exact schedule but thought it would take about 10 – 12 weeks or so to complete.

Now that the Blockbuster signs have been taken down you can see that there used to be a carpet shop there. Does anyone remember this? Can’t remember the name. Maybe they got run out of town by Allied Carpets which used to be where Lidl (or maybe Bright House) is now.
The old sign says Harris Carpets. Was this the precursor to Carpetright, founded by Lord Harris in 1988? I find it interesting how the use of shops changes over time. Carpet shop, video shop, mini-supermarket. My local fish and chip shop was a video hire shop when I moved into the neighbourhood.
